“What must I do, Mother, what must I do to make a different world for her? How do I start?”

“The secret lies in the reading and the writing. You are able to read. Every day you must read one page from some good book to your child. Every day this must be until the child learns to read. Then she must read every day. I know this is the secret.”

Katie & her mother, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

My favorite book is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn & in it Katie’s mom tells her that she should read a page of Shakespeare & a page of the Bible to her daughter Francie every day in order to make the world different for her. I have read this book almost once a year for the past 11 years & this is one part of the book that continually sticks out to me.I LOVE reading & I LOVE books. I love the history of books, the smell of them, the way they feel in my hands, the way the take me to a different place & time…it is definitely a love of mine that I want to pass down to Benjamin & my other children that I hope to eventually have. I read to Benjamin at least once a day & even though he may not understand what I’m reading I know it will make an impact on him. Sunday night I was so excited to find a complete works of Shakespeare at Barnes & Noble for only $20. Yesterday we started reading Romeo & Juliet & I’m so excited to continue reading to him daily along with our page of the Bible, we started in Proverbs. Hopefully I can keep this up, it is number 20 on my list of things to accomplish this year. 🙂
